Frequently asked questions
How secure is it?+
The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest method PDF knows. How secure it is depends mostly on the password: long and hard to guess is good.
Do you store my password?+
No. The password is sent to our server for this one operation only, never stored in a database or a log, and discarded within minutes at the latest. That is also why we cannot recover a forgotten password.
What do the permissions do?+
You can lock printing, copying and changes. PDF programs respect them, but they protect less than the password to open. With a separate password for the permissions they can be lifted later.
Why a server?+
The encryption is done by a proven tool on our servers in the EU. The files are deleted after 60 minutes, with “Delete now” at once.
What does it cost?+
Twenty operations a month are free, a hundred with an account. If an operation fails, nothing is charged.
Can the recipient open the file without extra software?+
Yes. Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview on the Mac and the common browsers ask for the password when opening it.
Do I need an account?+
No. Protecting works without signing in, for PDFs up to 100 MB, and counts as one operation from your free monthly allowance.
