What is HEIC?+
The image format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default. It takes less space than JPG, but some programs and upload forms do not accept it.
Does it work on a Windows PC or on Android?+
Yes. Safari reads HEIC itself; in other browsers the photo is converted in your browser first. If a photo ever cannot be opened, we say so on the file; then save it as a JPG.
Are my photos uploaded?+
No. The HEIC conversion happens in your browser too. The photos never leave your device.
Why does my iPhone sometimes send JPG and sometimes HEIC?+
It depends on how the photo leaves the iPhone and on the camera settings. Some routes convert to JPG on the way, others pass the HEIC file on as it is. Both work here.

iPhone photos without a detour

A manageable file size
Phone photos have a lot of megapixels. For a PDF you can send, they are scaled to at most 2000 pixels on the long edge and saved at an adjustable quality. That way even twenty photos usually stay under 10 MB.
Photographed paper?
If the photo shows a sheet of paper, such as a receipt or a form, “Scan” gives a better result: the edges are found, the page is straightened and shadows are evened out. HEIC photos work there too.
