Frequently asked questions
How do I tell which kind of protection the file has?+
If the PDF asks for a password when opening, it is encrypted and you need that password. If it opens but will not print, copy or be filled in, only permissions are set. You can lift those without entering anything.
Can you find out a forgotten password?+
No. The tool is for files whose password you know. We cannot recover a forgotten password.
May I unlock someone else's PDF?+
Only unlock files that belong to you or whose password you received legitimately, such as your own bank statements.
Do you store my password?+
No. It is sent to our server for this operation only, never stored in a database or a log, and discarded within minutes at the latest.
What does it cost?+

When a PDF gets in the way
Bank statements, invoices and payslips often come with a password. That makes sense for sending, but it is a nuisance day to day: every time you open the file you have to type it, and many programs cannot edit the file at all. Other PDFs open but do not allow printing, copying or filling in. With the password you know, you can remove both.
Two kinds of protection
- Password to open: the file is encrypted. Without the password nobody can read it, not even us.
- Permissions: the file opens, but printing, copying or changes are restricted. These restrictions can be lifted without a password.
Editing afterwards
The unlocked file opens in every tool. With “Continue with” it goes straight on without uploading again, for example to annotate it, organise its pages or sign it. To protect it again later, there is “Protect PDF”.
